Meetings

July 17, 2008

Still no lie. We're pushing July back a week, too! Why? iPhone, baby! iPhone!

iPhone 3G drops on the 11th, the day after we would normally meet. What's fun about that? So by mutual agreement at the June meeting, we're pushing the July meeting back a week to the 17th.

What's the agenda? TBD. But you have to believe it's going to have something to do with the iPhone, right?

Will Apple have removed the NDA surrounding iPhone SDK by then? We don't know. What will show if they haven't? We don't know!

Hey, why not volunteer? Lead a meeting! - Send us your suggestions

UPDATE: it turns out that Apple still hasn't lifted the NDA on the iPhone SDK. What's up with that?? What will it mean for the meeting? Who knows -- we'll probably still end up talking about it, at least informally.

But the great news is that we now have a presentation!

Kolja Wawrowsky will be giving a presentation on the research and software development he is doing. The title of his presentation is:

"Where art meets science. Visualization software for the life sciences."

Be there or be...well, you know...

We meet at the offices of E! Entertainment at 7:30pm.

Our meeting location is

Los Angeles, CA 90036. Google Map

Free street parking is available. Masselin Ave, which is one block East of Courtyard Place, generally has spaces available.

We meet near the lobby of the West building at 5750 Wilshire Blvd, on the West side of Courtyard Place. There are picnic tables in front of the lobby and we'll gather there at 7pm. From there we go inside and up to conference room 3A.

If you arrive late, please ask the building security personnel in the lobby to direct you to the E! Security office, and they will be able to contact the group in conference room 3A and send someone down to meet you.

See you there!

Yep, it's no lie. We're pushing June back a week! Get back June, get back!

Since WWDC occupies the second week -- and we'll all have lots to talk about after WWDC -- we're moving the June meeting to the evening of the 19th.

What will we talk about? Anything and everything! WWDC (to the extent we can), the Keynote, the iPhone, the parties, the entertainment, the water show.

Plus, if you signed up for a Super Cool CocoaHeads Polo Shirt -- and if you did, you know who you are -- we have a few left to give out if you didn't make it the May meeting.

Don't miss it!

This month...um, we're still working on it!

We'll have a rousing discussion of Cocoa. Perhaps on how to build and support frameworks, your own and third party. Perhaps on something entirely different!

Plus, if you signed up for a Super Cool CocoaHeads Polo Shirt -- and if you did, you know who you are -- we'll be distributing them at the May meeting.

Don't miss it!

This month something new and exciting!

Ricardo Silva will be giving a presentation on using Quartz Composer.

Bring your questions: stay for the fun! (Seriously, this should be a great topic.)

Howdy LA CocoaHeads!

Gautam Godse will be giving us a presentation on XCode 3 and how it compares to XCode 2.

We may also spend a little time talking about ZFS, gossiping about the iPhone SDK, and whatever else we can come up with :)

Howdy LA CocoaHeads!

Bruce Johnson will be giving us a little demo of some image processing in Cocoa. He'll be presenting "a tutorial cocoa app that loads an image, analyzes the histogram and then adjusts the exposure to give a more pleasing image.  It is sort of an "auto-exposure" application."

Not only that, but in an LA CocoaHeads FIRST we actually have a speaker for next month lined up as well! On March 13th Gautam Godse will be giving us an overview of XCode 3 and comparing it to XCode 2.

Well gang,

I got quite a few positive responses to my email yesterday so it seems there's enough interest to have a meeting tomorrow night. We don't have a formal presentation, but it was suggested we could all share our knowledge of the upcoming iPhone SDK. The floor is also open to any other discussions we want to have about Cocoa or Mac development in general.

November 8, 2007

Hey LA CocoaHeads.

We'll be having our monthly meeting this Thursday at 7:30pm.

This month is all about Leopard, the latest version of Mac OS X.

I was hoping to do something a little different this month. I'd like for us all to participate in the discussion, so I am asking everyone to come prepared to discuss one new feature of Leopard for 5-10 minutes. We can cover just the end-user functionality, or the programming API, but any coverage of a new Leopard feature is the goal.

If you have an idea on what you'd like to talk about, please send the group an email so we don't all claim the same feature :)

This could be fun, and it takes the pressure off a single person having to prepare a big presentation for the night.

You asked for it, you got it!

Due to popular demand, we will indeed be having a CocoaHeads LA meeting on Sept. 13th at 7:30pm.

Darrin Cardani of Apple will be giving a presentation on writing an FxPlug.

What is an FxPlug you ask?

"FxPlug is a compact yet powerful image processing plug-in architecture that lets you create new effects for Final Cut Pro and Motion."

For more information, be sure to read the FXPlug SDK Overview from Apple.

We meet at the offices of E! Entertainment at 7:30pm.

February, 2007

This Thursday, Feb 8th, we have our monthly meeting.

Steve Gehrman will be showing us how easy it is to write a Path Finder plugin.

For those not familiar with Path Finder, it's a cool Mac app from Cocoatech that provides extended file browsing and management, with an amazing number of built-in utilities for doing Cocoa development.

Our meeting location is

5750 Wilshire Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90036.

Free street parking is available. I'd suggest trying Masselin Ave, which is one block East of Courtyard Place.

We meet near the lobby of the West building at 5750 Wilshire Blvd, on the West side of Courtyard Place. There are picknick tables in front of the lobby and we'll gather there at 7pm. From there we go inside and up to conference room 3A.

If you arrive late, please ask the building security personel in the lobby to direct you to the E! Security office, and they will be able to contact the group in conference room 3A and send someone down to meet you.

P.S. This will be Steve's last meeting, as he is moving up North, so come join us in saying farewell to Steve. Steve graciously hosted the first CocoHeads LA meetings at the Cocoatech offices before we moved to our new location, so this is a great opportunity to come and say "so long and thanks for all the fish!" Perhaps after the meeting we can all go across the street for dinner.

Hope to see you all there!.

Greetings LA CocoaHeads!

Thursday's presentation will be given by Darrin Cardani from Apple, who has graciously agreed to talk about Cocoa multithreading. Thanks Darrin!

We will be meeting at the offices of E! Entertainment on Thursday, October 12th at 7pm. The meeting will last until 9pm.

The address is: 5750 Wilshire Blvd.LA, CA 90036 Google Map

Free street parking is available. I'd suggest trying Masselin Ave, which is one block East of the E! building.

The group will meet at the picnic tables in the courtyard of the West building (on Courtyard Place) in front of the lobby of the E! building. From there, we'll move up to conference room 3A.

If you show up late, either call the conference room at 323-692-4599, or proceed to the E! Security desk (the building's lobby security can direct you) and tell them you are here for the meeting in conference room 3A so I can come down and escort you up.

After the presentation, I hope to solicit input from the group about what subjects would be interesting for future presentations, as well as (hopefully) find out who in the group would be interested in presenting something themselves!

There are several restaurants right across the street so after the meeting anyone interested can join us for a post-meeting chat.

I'm looking forward to meeting with everyone again.

See you Thursday,

Rob Ross, Lead Software Engineer
